Ocean Mural

Jack and I took an idea we saw out of a Magic School Bus book to recreate our own drawing of the ocean. I'm not quite sure who exactly had more fun doing it, Jack.................or me. Lets just say, we both had a blast doing it haha :) Which is exactly how learning should be! He makes some lovely Jellyfish, he's still obsessed with Jellyfish by the way!

Jack could not pick a favorite part, he said he enjoyed all of it. Haha. He did a fantastic job recreating the tide pool and did it all himself! Here he is working on a boat. He even put a motor on the back :)I will say, underwater vents fascinate me. Completely. I think they are amazing. We watched a show on them a while back, I think it was on Planet Earth. Anyways, they have caught my attention ever since then. Jack is drawing a Giant Tube Worm here.

Talking about the underwater vents, lead to a touching the subject of the layers of the earth. He had a really hard time understanding this, so this will have to be a topic we will cover soon. Grasping the idea of lava being under the crust, didn't really sit well with him ;)I'd say we have learned quite a bit on ocean life lately. It's such a broad subject, you could easily spend a long time on it!

More ocean facts are
  • There is more water on our earth than there is land. Seventy One percent of the earth is water.
  • The deepest trenches are located in our oceans. The Mariana trench goes down about 7 miles.
  • The largest mountain range, the Mid-Ocean Ridge System, is located in our ocean.
  • The Pacific Ocean is our largest ocean.
  • Life began in the sea over 3 Billion years ago.

This project looks very familiar to me! I think we made amural very much like this after reading a Magic School Bus book last summer. LOL Very nice artwork by the way.
I've been enjoying all your great projects on your blog especially those play-doh brains floating experiments. Hope to see you again on the Hands-On Carnival!
Blessings,
Cheryl

I love how you saw something in a MSB book - and decided to create your own! My daughter (and I) LOVED MSB. She has only recently "out grown" them, though I hope we will still visit them from time to time. If not, we'll hand them down to her cousin! Great books! (videos, too - we owned quite a few and DVRd all of them we could)
